the public educator I must Foster self-reliance and social responsibility in every suit we were waiting I made it through the rain I kept my world protected I made it through the rain kept my point view I made it through the rain and found myself respected by the others who got rained onto and made it through through this is me karaoke stage right go to your daughter told me we're doing karaoke this thumbs up my apologies to your hearing and to the great philosopher Barry Manilow but the point is you made it you did it you cross that finish line even though there were some serious Optical staring you down what the reward is here the three reasons all teachers teach right everyone get ready to say it with me on three right three reasons we all teach licensure renewal professional development opportunities than second seasonal summer jobs that's right June July and August most of June bride summer July Orono all of July and that little bit of the beginning but y'all know that Duty filled spring is giving way to the freedom of Summer that glorious summer beckoning right over there just like I don't know what cold mid-afternoon mid-afternoon Margarita right sitting there and then there's a trip planned somewhere there right cool edifying place waiting to be explored what was on one of those summer family excursions that I first began thinking about what I want to talk about today me and we so it was a few Summers back on one particular souvenir Hunting Expedition during our family vacation to Boston that I began to question what I was actually trying to accomplish as a teacher I mean question outside of that General daily self-doubt right but anyway my children is already picked out their mementos from the trip right so my my daughter she found this like magical purse that was just one continuous zipper hooded zip right thing and then it's like this totally useless longest zipper you've ever seen that don't attach to anything at all and my son red baseball cap Vinny then have hand-embroidered with this sweet offset Shamrock on the brim you know Boston right right we probably souvenirs as we wandered around the key off and food carts that orbit Faneuil Hall the place for the first protest against British tyranny began back in 1767 the place where Daniel Webster Village eyes Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on the 4th of July in 1826 you don't like a real place of historical significance that I teach about my classes so was here under the watchful eye of that gilded grasshopper that Weathervane perch right at the top of that golden dome that my wife and I found a trinket cart for students with a wide variety of t-shirt no just the kind of mature souvenir for a middle-aged guy like myself right no leprechaun salt and pepper shakers are big old goofy clown glasses for this guy anymore. So from the what are the car my lovely wife chose this shirt of Deep Blue and blazing with Boston across the front in this kind of Starsky and Hutch actually kind of van was great pic just the other day she was showing off how well she wears it so those three were good to go I'm beginning to give me the eye as I struggle to find my memento I couldn't decide because nothing seemed to match the importance of Faneuil Hall the birthplace of our Collective desire for Independence and it was in my thinking about what I really wanted to take away from this place that I discovered another Sting the pizza part of my teaching you know like when somebody asks you what do you teach right and you know it first I'd say things like history or wiser when somebody would ask what you think it's a kids right but what I found this third thing me and Willie us and I so am I increasingly freak on Nation I move to the back side of that car which unlike the busy front side simply displayed two different styles of sure you would recognize both and I immediately saw in them something in my teaching right there August for everybody to see the first pick that dismembered rattlesnake and like my daily teaching has probably seen some better days right so you took his eight pieces table with letters that represent an original colony or region right and with his apparent eulogy engraved underneath it Join or Die so Ben Franklin crafted that woodcut image back 1754 he published what is now considered to be the first editorial cartoon in his Pennsylvania Gazette to drum up colonial support for the British effort to push the Native Americans and French out of the Ohio River Valley Indian War I can hear the 8th graders going right but it was such an effective and Powerful symbol that its meaning transcended that singular message it's so it morphed to fit other O'Neill Meats it's what was some 20 short years later that same image was used drum up colonial support two separate from those same British in either case supporting or separating represented Benz belief and ultimately ours that we're stronger together United and our future depends upon our cooperation us we the second shirt food a coiled rattlesnake prepared to strike underscored by that invective don't tread on me just a short aside about this early equation of snakes with the colonies what are the fascinating forms of van that the colonists found when they came to the new world was the rattlesnake its distinct markings and unique sound stood out to a people who rarely saw snakes in their Homeland Ben Franklin first use this animal is a symbol when suggested back in 1751 in his Pennsylvania Gazette that since the British were consistently sending criminals to the colonies at that time that it might behoove the colonists to send Timber Rattler back to the British I think Ben had a future and School administration if he were to present this Innovative plan is a school to home Exchange program for dealing with some of our more challenging students right kind of like snakes success or snakes or success something like that tell me how the rattlesnake came to symbolize the colonies as it was a uniquely American Icon like the bald eagle those Rattlers carry message for the colonists the British and mighty Chi so what's flashback to the don't tread on me t-shirt or more specifically the Gadsden t-shirt the Continental Navy adopted this image 1775 to represent their strength and resolve in their fight against British tyranny to fight against the British Empire to battle the ill will of the collective Beginnings this symbol have come to represent the strength of the individual I me and it's this dichotomy I and we Us in me that lies at the heart are unique American identity historically we Americans have benefited from both a sense of rugged individualism and a Reliance on community we celebrate the success creative entrepreneurs like Bill Gates Clara Barton Henry Ford Wendy Kopp and we also celebrate the achievements of collective effort like the interstate highway system for instant for space exploration for ensuring the safety of food and water our two-party political structure recipe on this philosophical divide between a belief in self-reliance and a faith in the good of Association separate ourselves politically based upon which side of that divided we fall Society self and our American school system is another very public arena in which these two ideas compete not so distant past education was the sole responsibility of the family where the parents taught the children or tutors were hired to come in and teach the Young learning was left in the hall the church were the first Americans to toy with his idea public education as early as except put on this continent and 6009 their desire to instill their ideals and their values Webb City's public efforts in the New England region we to you so this principle then permeated our nation until public education became the norm as all states by 1870 had some form elementary schools and by 1910 every state in the Union Institute of compulsory Elementary education and its secondary schools were an integral part of this system an ultimately then Trix funded by local property taxes governed by locally elected School Board became the norm are these locally directed school districts focused education on the values and goals there were open communities Community the individual and back but recently this locally driven approach has been question as our students have underperformed on standardized tests when are the kids of other nations we worry that our children can't read to calculate can't think as well as kids from Finland or South Korea soar approach to this problem is by pushing towards rotter at the expense of the meat we deliver Statewide test based upon State Standards derive from nationally created expectations like the Common Core recessed of learning and instruction with instruments required by States and in this quest for more systemic and measurable achievement in our students communities relinquish their ability to install Lowe's unique value that arise from their distinct character the distinct flavor of locality our towns give up their independence for the good of the nation so that what was holding me up as I started those two sneaking shirts right and my family impatiently stared at me cuz both of those shirts spoke to me in some kind of hissy Parseltongue kind of way right because he something important in the American identity personal Liberty and the strength of the Commonwealth history in half so what does mean cuz I do that I think about my instruction when I shouldn't forget the one or the many me or we or I does my teaching emphasize the kid or the country so I usually in that story by saying I did what I always do when faced with that kind of cognitive conundrum I gave up right I turned around and I bought a Boston Red Sox what I did cuz I don't really like the Boston Red Sox don't really care much for baseball and honestly I believe in both use Join or Die and don't tread on me and so really I should have bought both those shirts but hey right I'm on vacation on a teacher salary the truth is that we need both for our nation in schools succeed as a public educator I must Foster self-reliance and social responsibility in every student to achieve our children must be creatively independent and dependable cooperative I believe that whatever good has come from this American Experience experiment regarding the one and the many is the result of the dynamic between these two ideas individual Freedom with regard to the will of the community is anarchy blind allegiance to the will of the collective without thought of individual liberties is totalitarianism schools of all places must navigate between these two extremes Educators must balance their instruction to Foster both courageous Independence and respectful collaboration within our children I'm Foster both the free the individual and the duty to the community all Educators must work to accomplish with the collective expect like tending to the talents of every child by attending to the learning and strength needs of every student by caring for the kid and the community as teachers we was choose both regardless of the cost thank you
