CPI

San Juan BOCES has 3 Instructors certified through The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) to provide training to member districts. 
 

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® training equips you with an effective framework to safely manage and prevent difficult behavior.

A variety of training options are available.  Staff may register for trainings in their district or in any district.  Registering as a team with your school is encouraged. 

Initial Training 

This training is a full day - 8am to 2pm with Disengagement and Restraint from 2pm-4pm.

The focus of this training is to provide all staff an in depth training on behavior de-escalation.  Topics covered include understanding why behavior escalates, matching your response to the behavior level, the role of verbal and non-verbal interventions and specific limit setting and de-escalation tools . Staff who regularly work with students who may require physical restraint for safety will receive an additional 2 hours of instruction and practice using the CPI Disengagement Skills and Physical Interventions from 2-4pm.  Certification is good for one year.


Refresher Training - De-Escalation with no restraint

This training is ¾ Day - 8am-2pm. It is only available to staff who wish to maintain a current CPI certification and do not require refreshing on restraint skills.

This is required once a year for all staff to keep certification current. The focus of this training is to provide all staff an in depth review if behavior de-escalation skills.  Topics covered include understanding why behavior escalated, matching your response to the behavior level, the role of verbal and non-verbal interventions and specific limit setting and de-escalation tools.  Certification is good for one year.


Refresher Training - Restraint Focused

¾ day to Full Day - 8am to 2pm or 4pm as needed. 

This refresher is required for all staff who regularly work with students who may need physical restraint for safety.  This refresher reviews both verbal de-escalation skills and spends several hours of time reviewing CPI Disengagement Skills and Physical Interventions. .  It is recommended that this refresher course be taken as a school team. Certification is good for one year.


**CenterBase Program Staff**

All staff who work in CenterBase and Day Treatment programs are required to participate in a supplemental case review training of 2 hours every 6 months. These trainings will be scheduled directly between the program and the CPI Instructor.


All CPI training classes have a maximum of 25 participants.  Participants who arrive at the training who have not registered will not be allowed to participate.  Registration for CPI classes closes 48 hours prior to the training.  


All CPI trainings are posed on the BOCES website.  Cost is $30 per person.
