Homeschool and Private School Students

Gifted education and funding in the San Juan BOCES member districts and in the state of Colorado is executed through the Exceptional Children's Educational Act (ECEA).  Colorado’s ECEA law does not provide for gifted assessment, evaluation, or services for homeschool or private school students, nor those currently participating in a shared school model that does not include direct instruction in strength areas (academic or talent).  ECEA is a state law, and is different from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or the Child Find mandate, which are governed and mandated at the federal level.

Within the education system, we identify gifted students in order to connect them with appropriate services in the public school setting.  If your child is currently enrolled in a public school in one of the SJBOCES member districts, your first point of contact is your district or building gifted coordinator.  They will be able to guide you through the gifted referral and evaluation process. This information is also accessible on the SJBOCES Gifted webpage.
